GLUT was originally written by Mark Kilgard to support the sample programs in the second edition OpenGL 'RedBook'. Since then, GLUT has been used in a wide variety of practical applications because it is simple, widely available and highly portable.
Relationship between OpenGL, GLU, and GLUT
OpenGL is a rendering library with predefined shaders inside. What controls these shaders is GLSL (Graphic Library Shader Language), and what was made to make this easier is GLEW(GL extension Wrangler Library).
The functions that can draw or manipulate things in openGL are GLU (GL Utility library), and since GLU/GL have no handling for input such as the keyboard or mouse, what handles this and manages it in an integrated way is GLUT (GL Utility Toolkit).
Anyway, since GLUT includes the OS-specific platform, there is probably GLX (GL extension for unix/Linux Xwindow) or WGL (GL extension for Microsoft Windows) between openGL and GLUT?

GLX is said to be an extension for X, and XGL is an Xserver that supports GLX:
