Openfire is a real-time collaboration (RTC) server. It is open source under the Apache License. Openfire uses only XMPP (also called Jabber), a widely adopted instant messaging protocol. Openfire is very easy to set up and administer, yet it offers solid security and great performance.
How to install
This describes how to install OpenFire, based on CentOS 7.
First, install the related packages.
$ yum update
$ yum install –y epel-release
$ yum install zlib.i686 libstdc++.i686 mc lsof htop net-tools
$ yum install –y mariadb mariadb-server
Install MySQL and start the service.
Download and install the OpenFire package.
$ wget http://igniterealtime.org/downloads/download-landing.jsp?file=openfire/openfire-3.10.0-1.i386.rpm
$ rpm -ivh openfire-3.10.0-1.i386.rpm
Set up the MySQL database.
$ mysql -p -uroot
mysql> CREATE DATABASE openfire CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;
mysql> GRANT ALL ON openfire.* TO 'openfire'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'PasswordHere';
mysql> flush privileges;
mysql> use openfire;
mysql> source /opt/openfire/resources/database/openfire_mysql.sql;
mysql> exit
Open the firewall ports.
$ firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=public --add-port=9090/tcp ## web-gui admin setting.
$ firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=public --add-port=9091/tcp ## web-gui security admin setting.
$ firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=public --add-port=5222/tcp ## Client Connections Settings
$ firewall-cmd --reload
Start the OpenFire service.
To start the GUI setup, go to http://YOUR-SERVER-IP:9090. There is nothing in particular to change, but be careful with the Database URL setting when configuring the Database.
Finally, the administrator ID is admin.
