OpenDisc is a project that hand-picks and provides high-quality open-source software that can be installed and used on Microsoft Windows. The project's goals are "to provide free software that performs as well as or better than the proprietary, shareware, and freeware software available on Microsoft Windows, so that it can replace paid software" and "to teach people to use Linux as their operating system at home, at work, and at school." Accordingly, all programs included in OpenDisc are programs that can also be used on Linux.
OpenDisc was created in September 2007 by Chris Gray, the former leader of OpenCD. He reportedly left the OpenCD project at the time because, as OpenCD proceeded with Canonical's support and involvement, he grew skeptical about his beliefs having a negative influence on those around him. OpenCD was discontinued on September 27, 2007, and OpenDisc took its place.
