OpenCV:Moments

Moments describe a distribution about a point or an axis. For this reason, in OpenCV moments represent the average of image pixel intensities. In other words, moments can be seen as a set of real values that describe the shape of an image.

When processing images in real time, such as camera video, a computer converts the image's pixel values into some numbers. Between two consecutive frames (images) in a video, there is bound to be some change or motion. Moments make it possible to detect motion between consecutive images. Moments are used to detect image features that remain unchanged when an object in the image undergoes rotation, translation, or other forms of transformation. To say it once more, image moments are parameters that measure the pixel intensity distribution.
