Open-source software (OSS; North Korean standard language: gonggae woncheon software, literally "open-source software") is software that meets an open-source license, publishing its source code so that anyone can view and use the code without particular restrictions. It is usually just called open source for short.

The open-source model, or collaborative development from many independent sources, produces a far wider range of design perspectives than any single company could develop or maintain. According to a 2008 report by the Standish Group, adoption of the open-source software model saves consumers $60 billion a year.

Open-source software is generally similar to free software, but "free software" is used for software associated with the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project in the sense of emphasizing freedom, while "open-source software" is a term that emphasizes the form of the source itself.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI), opensource.org, is a nonprofit association responsible for maintaining and promoting the Open Source Definition (OSD). Through the open-source software (OSS) certification mark granted by the OSI, it certifies that software is actually open source, and copying of open source is also possible. It is an organization that embodies the basic idea of open source: by allowing the source code of software to be freely read, redistributed, and modified, software improves, and many people fixing, using, and improving bugs can be faster than one person developing software at a slow pace.
