Ogg is a multimedia container format. It is an open standard file format not protected by patents, developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation to enable efficient transmission and processing of multimedia bitstreams. Ogg streams usually carry audio in the Ogg Vorbis sound file format, but they can also contain other formats such as Ogg Theora.
An Ogg format file can hold information stored with several different open-source codecs for audio, video, and text (e.g. subtitles). A file with the .ogg extension may correspond to any one of the several Ogg media file formats mentioned above. And because it is a file format that can be used free of charge, Ogg's various codecs can be built into many free and commercial media players as well as a variety of portable media players.
Projects that currently use Ogg by default include Vorbis, Speex, and Theora, and the FLAC project as well as the Schrödinger project, a subproject of the Dirac project, also support the Ogg format.
Since 2007, the Xiph.org Foundation has recommended using the .ogg extension only for Ogg Vorbis audio files. The Xiph Foundation also decided to create new file extensions such as .oga, .ogv, and .ogx. .oga is used for files containing only audio, .ogv for video that does not include sound, and .ogx for Ogg with multiplexing applied.
