Uninstall nvidia driver
- How can I uninstall a nvidia driver completely ?
- (Solved) An NVIDIA kernel module 'nvidia-drm' appears to already be loaded in your kernel - Clay-Technology World
If you need to remove it manually, try the following.
sudo apt-get remove --purge '^nvidia-.*'
In recent versions, the following commands solve it:
Reboot.
(After rebooting) Obtain administrator privileges to stop all processes using the GPU:
Close all processes using the GPU and disable the nvidia driver.
For reference:
- modprobe's
-roption: removes a module or removes atuoclean modules - systemctl's
isolatecommand: applies immediately to the current session
(For reference) The default driver is enabled as follows.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
echo 'nouveau' | sudo tee -a /etc/modules
Starting without a monitor

Driver installation problems
ERROR: An NVIDIA kernel module 'nvidia-drm' appears to already be loaded in your kernel. This may be because it is in use (for example, by an X server, a CUDA program, or the NVIDIA Persistence Daemon), but this may also happen if your kernel was configured without support for module unloading. Please be sure to exit any programs that may be using the GPU(s) before attempting to upgrade your driver. If no GPU-based programs are running, you know that your kernel supports module unloading, and you still receive this message, then an error may have occurred that has corrupted an NVIDIA kernel module's usage count, for which the simplest remedy is to reboot your computer.
In short,
Refer to #Uninstall nvidia driver to remove the driver and reinstall it.
