A numeral system is a way of representing numbers visually, and each number represented through a numeral system has a notation that distinguishes it from other numbers. The simplest and most primitive numeral system is the unary numeral system, which expresses every number using only a symbol for 1; numeral systems later developed into forms such as sign-value notation, which has symbols for specific numbers, and the positional system, which represents numbers using the position and coefficient of each digit. In modern usage, the term numeral system generally means the positional system.
