Nondestructive testing (also nondestructive evaluation, examination, or inspection; NDT, NDE, or NDI) is a method used in manufacturing to inspect workpieces, structures, members, submersibles, and the like for integrity, surface condition, cracks, and so on without destroying them.
Representative methods include the liquid penetrant technique, magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic inspection, acoustic emission, radiography, eddy current inspection, thermal inspection, and holography techniques, and they are used to observe surface or internal defects in materials. Because materials can be inspected without being destroyed, these methods are mainly used to inspect and evaluate expensive parts such as aircraft components (product evaluation), solve problems (troubleshooting), and conduct research (research) while saving time and money.
Types and features
Nondestructive testing is a method used in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and materials science to inspect the product integrity or surface condition of a workpiece without deforming it.
Representative nondestructive tests include
- Liquid penetrant method (liquid-penetrants technique)
- Magnetic particle inspection (magnetic-particle inspection technique)
- Ultrasonic testing (ultrasonic inspection)
- Acoustic emission method (acoustic-emission technique)
- Radiographic testing (radiography)
- Eddy current testing (eddy-current inspection method)
- Thermal testing (thermal inspection)
- Holography (holography technique)
and others.
