A network administrator establishes guidelines for operating and managing network systems. They understand the configuration of the overall network system and monitor and manage its operating status in real time. They record and manage data on the installation locations, layout, and wiring of network cables, and update and manage it when network cables are extended or changed. They set up and assign an addressing scheme for users' PCs, server computers, peripherals, and other devices connected to the network, and adjust address settings when the network is changed or extended. When a failure or operational anomaly is found in the network system, they identify the problem and restore service quickly. When the network system is changed or newly extended, they install the newly procured systems and test and evaluate their functionality and performance according to a test plan. They use the functions and characteristics of a Network Management System (NMS) to carry out performance management, configuration management, and fault management efficiently.
They establish security policies for the network system and implement technical and administrative security to prevent hacking through external networks. They manage the registration, assignment, and deletion of email IDs for network users and provide Internet-related services. The network administrator provides training and technical advice on the setup procedures and practices for the network protocols and services needed to connect users' PCs to the network. They provide technical support when users' PCs have problems connecting to the network. They manage communication failures on lines connected to external networks (leased lines, telephone networks, etc.) in close cooperation with the external network providers. They research and develop ways to effectively incorporate various applications that can be served over the network.
