NetBeans refers to a platform for developing Java-based user programs, or an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for developing in Java, JavaScript (Javascript), PHP, Python, Ruby, Groovy, C, C++, and more.
NetBeans is written in Java, so it can be used in any environment with a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and installers are provided for Windows, Linux, Solaris (x86/x64, sparc), and Mac OS X for convenience.
Along with Eclipse, it is one of the most widely used free Java IDEs, and it won the 17th Jolt Award in 2007 (development environment category).
