Cursor for data

Features

  • A VS Code-based AI code editor specialized for data work; connects directly to BigQuery/Snowflake/Postgres and provides schema-aware code generation and quality checks
  • Whereas existing LLM-based tools autocomplete SQL without knowing the data schema, nao generates accurate SQL/Python/YAML code with a RAG-based AI tab and agent tools
  • Write, run, and visualize SQL pipelines in a single interface
  • Python pipelines are also supported in the same environment, as are dbt workflows
  • Shows at a glance the differences in output data before and after a code change and data quality issues, so you can deploy quickly without tests or avoid mistakes
  • Main use cases
    • Building data pipelines (SQL, dbt, etc.)
    • Detecting missing values/duplicates/outliers
    • Comparing development vs production data
    • Running and summarizing predefined tests
  • Integrated with dbt, BI tools, and data warehouses, providing an IDE environment suited to data engineers, analysts, and data scientists alike
  • Supports BigQuery, Snowflake, and Postgres, with Databricks, Iceberg, and Redshift support coming soon
  • Integration with Looker, Power BI, Metabase, and Tableau also planned
  • Currently Mac only; Windows/Linux versions planned
  • Differences from Cursor and MCPs
    • Cursor needs multiple MCP calls to get data context; in Nao it is always available from a single RAG
    • MCPs work only in a limited way inside Cursor, and the UI adapts poorly
    • Nao is pre-packaged, so no setup, extension installation, authentication, or CI/CD building is needed; its strength is that even non-experts can get a better development experience
