Mythology (神話) refers to religion handed down from a nation, a people, or a civilization that was once a religion but is no longer worshipped. Mythology has given rise to diverse cultures, as much as the influence it once wielded as religion, and it has left traces not only in architecture, literature, and art but even in the words people use. Stories handed down from ancient times like myths are also called legends, but compared with myths, the subjects of legends are usually independent of one another, and they tend to be fragmentary in structure. Myths, by contrast, include a cosmology and have the system of a religion.
