Musical notation is a way of writing down music. Staff notation is the most widely used.
In Western music, letter notation, which indicates pitch with letters, has existed since ancient times; in the Middle Ages there was 'neume (neuma)' notation, and in the 12th century mensural notation, which indicates note durations on five lines, appeared. In the 17th century, five-line staff notation almost identical to what is used today was established, and it became today's worldwide notation. In the East, too, letter notation has been used since long ago, and in many varieties.
