MusicXML:Element:scaling
lastmod 2023-04-25created 2023-04-253 edits
Margins, page sizes, and distances are all measured in tenths to keep MusicXML data in as consistent a coordinate system as possible.
Conversion to absolute units is done with the <scaling> element, which specifies how many tenths correspond to how many millimeters.
If the staff height is 7 mm, <millimeters> is set to 7 and <tenths> is set to 40.
The ability to set a formula rather than a single scaling factor helps avoid roundoff errors.
