In operating systems, a monolithic kernel refers to a kernel structure and design philosophy. It is also called a single-type kernel. It is the technique of loading and running the general functions of an operating system, such as I/O, networking, and device support, in the same memory space as the kernel.
Representative monolithic kernel OSes include the classic Unix-like operating systems.
