MongoDB (from HUMONGOUS) is a cross-platform document-oriented database system. Classified as a NoSQL database, MongoDB eschews the traditional table-based relational database structure in favor of JSON-like documents with dynamic schemas (MongoDB calls this format BSON). This makes data integration easier and faster for certain types of applications. Released under a combination of the Affero GPL and the Apache License, MongoDB is free and open-source software.
It was first developed in October 2007 by 10gen (now MongoDB), a New York City-based company, as a component of a planned PaaS (platform as a service) product, and moved to an open-source development model in 2009, when 10gen began offering commercial support and other services. Since then, MongoDB has been adopted as backend software by numerous major websites and services such as Craigslist, eBay, Foursquare, SourceForge, and The New York Times. MongoDB is the most popular NoSQL database system.
