It has the following meanings.

Academic meaning

Also called the structural method. Model (a mock-up) + (l)ing; taken literally, it means the work of making models and the like.

Data model

With the rise of the information society, predictive models based on data are becoming increasingly important.

The big data craze that spread like a fad was also welcomed largely in the hope that it would make it possible to build models that predict more accurately.

Predictive models are adopted through the stages of training → testing → deploying, and a good model requires good training data.

Modeling is an attempt to predict reality through a framework that imitates reality, and if that framework is built out of line with reality, the prediction is meaningless.

Therefore, it is best to use training data that does not deviate greatly from reality.

3D Modeling

The one in computer graphics.

Architectural term

Like the 3D modeling above, the act of building up a structure as planned in architecture, or of arranging an interior design as planned.

Used far more often as remodeling, meaning rebuilding or redesigning, than as the word modeling itself.

Child development term

The phenomenon in which merely observing another person's behavior increases the likelihood of doing that behavior. It is especially common at a young age.
