About

  • MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a new standard for connecting AI assistants to data systems such as content repositories, business tools, and development environments, with the goal of producing better responses
  • As AI assistants have become mainstream, the industry has invested heavily in model capabilities, achieving rapid progress in reasoning and quality. However, isolated from data, even the most sophisticated models are trapped behind information silos and legacy systems. Every new data source requires a custom implementation, making connected systems hard to scale
  • MCP solves this problem. MCP is a single protocol that integrates data sources and AI systems, simplifying fragmented integration work and providing more reliable connectivity

Model Context Protocol (MCP)

  • MCP is an open standard that lets you build secure, two-way connections between data sources and AI tools
  • The architecture is simple: developers can expose data through MCP servers or build MCP clients that connect to these servers
  • Key components
    • MCP specification and SDKs
    • Local MCP server support in the Claude desktop app
    • Open-source MCP server repository: Provides MCP servers supporting data sources such as Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, and Postgres
    • Claude 3.5 Sonnet helps build MCP server implementations quickly, helping companies and individuals quickly connect datasets to AI tools
    • Various companies, including Block, Apollo, Zed, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have adopted MCP to support information retrieval and capability extension for AI agents
  • Pros
    • Developers can use a standard protocol without maintaining separate connectors for each data source
    • AI systems can maintain context across multiple tools and datasets, enabling a more sustainable architecture

Getting started

  • Developers can start building and testing MCP connectors today
  • Claude for Work customers can test MCP servers locally to connect to internal systems and datasets
  • Developer tools for deploying remote production MCP servers will be provided soon

Hacker News comments

  • Model Context Protocol | Hacker News
  • After gathering information from Twitter, Reddit, and the documentation, came to understand the overall picture. Provides a quick-start guide for beginners
  • Has been working on this at Anthropic with @jspahrsummers for several months and is ready to answer questions
  • Needs more detail in the "Protocol Handshake" section about how natural language is converted into database queries. Wonders whether this can be customized when inefficient or incorrect queries affect the database. Needs a way to ensure sensitive data is not returned in queries
  • Glad to see a push for standardization; many people are writing their own integrations, so fragmentation and repetition are very high. Building a terminal coding agent and planning connections to external services. Appreciates Anthropic's mcp integration
  • If standardization happens, it will be a big help to the industry
  • Matt Pocock's 2-minute video overview is informative
  • Likes the idea of providing a unified interface for all LLMs, but hard to understand why it is local-only. It would be more interesting if Claude could access code repositories by connecting to github from a web app. Currently this seems possible with the local file system. When building LLM-based apps, wonders whether it can be used instead of injecting data into prompts with RAG. Thinks use cases with specific data are very limited for now
  • Wonders whether there will be LLM-specific APIs, and questions whether it would also be useful for general website-to-website API integration
  • Curious about the asymmetry between the prompt and sampling interfaces. Does not understand the difference between the client fetching prompts from the server and running them, and the server presenting completion requests to the client in the sampling interface. MCP's capability classes may evolve
  • Does not trust open-source solutions that are not from major players. Unless published together with other major players, the perverse incentives are too great
