Miracast

Miracast is a standard for wirelessly connecting devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones to displays such as televisions or monitors. It is described as "HDMI over Wi-Fi" because it replaces the cable when connecting a device to a screen.

The Wi-Fi Alliance launched the Miracast certification program in late 2012. Miracast-certified devices can communicate with each other regardless of manufacturer. Because adapters can be plugged into HDMI or USB ports, non-Miracast devices can also connect via Miracast.

Miracast uses the peer-to-peer Wi-Fi Direct standard. It can transmit up to 1080p HD video (H.264 codec) and 5.1 surround sound (AAC and AC3 are optional codecs; the mandatory codec is pulse-code modulation - 16-bit 48 kHz 2 channels). Because the connection is made via Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), it is secured with WPA2. IPv4 is used at the internet layer. TCP and UDP are used at the transport layer. At the application layer, streams are initialized and controlled via RTSP and RTP for data transmission.
