Maximum transmission unit

lastmod 2025-12-16created 2017-01-118 edits

In computer networking, the maximum transmission unit (MTU) of a layer's communication protocol is the size (in bytes) of the largest protocol data unit that the layer can transmit. The MTU metric generally appears in connection with a communication interface (network card, serial port, etc.). The MTU size may be fixed by a standard (Ethernet) or decided by the system at connection time (in the case of point-to-point serial links).
