A massively multiplayer online game (MMPOG; Massive Multi-Player Online Game; MMOG) is a game category in which a very large number (1000+) of users play a game over a network. It is also called MMOG, writing multiplayer as a single word.
It was initially called MMPOG, but because many games in the genre are role-playing games, general users more often use the term MMORPG.
Today, with the arrival of services such as Xbox LIVE on the Xbox 360 and PSN on the PlayStation 3, and the MMOFPS genre, it has become an industry term used regardless of genre.
