A massive open online course (MOOC) refers to interactive, large-scale education delivered through web services. Unlike traditional courses, where videos, handouts, and problem sets serve as supplementary materials, a MOOC is characterized by building a community of students, professors, and teaching assistants around internet discussion boards and running the course through it. The MOOC is an evolved form of distance education.
The core of early MOOCs was lifelong learning, open education, and mutual connection. Today, however, any educational approach that is open and has only some of these characteristics is collectively called a MOOC.
