Map projection

A map projection is a method of transferring the imaginary coordinates on the Earth, made up of parallels and meridians, onto a plane. Because the Earth is a sphere, distortion cannot be avoided no matter how small an area the map covers. A projection can therefore be defined as a method of handling this distortion.
