MapReduce is a software framework created by Google and announced in 2004 for processing large-scale data with distributed parallel computing. The framework was developed to support parallel processing of large data sets of petabytes or more in cluster environments made up of low-reliability computers. It is mainly built on functions called Map and Reduce, which are commonly used in functional programming.

MapReduce is currently written so that it can be applied in Java, C++, and other languages. Most notably, it has been adopted as open source software in Apache Hadoop.
