A manufacturing execution system (MES) is a management system that supports all activities on a company's production floor, such as work scheduling, work orders, quality control, and aggregation of work results. It is also called a production process management system. Overview
A manufacturing execution system supports decision-making between artificial intelligence and equipment by providing real-time information on shop-floor status to reduce the gap between production planning and execution. Looking at the functions of an MES, it provides unified management of all information that can arise on the production floor, including monitoring and control of process progress, equipment control, quality information management, aggregation of performance data, warehouse operations management, work-in-process management, material input management, and workforce management. In addition, in the artificial intelligence (AI) field of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it supports AI-based product planning for customer-need-driven production and smart technologies for the design stage, and gives intelligence to the various machines, equipment, and processes in a factory so that each entity can perform autonomous functions.
Key functions
The 11 key functions defined by MESA are as follows.
| No. | Name | Description |
| 1 | Resource Allocation and Status | Manages the allocation and status of resources on the manufacturing floor; provides functions to ensure that resources such as equipment, tools, and workers are properly allocated and to monitor their current status |
| 2 | Operations/Detailled Scheduling | Based on the production plan, establishes/manages schedules such as actual production priorities and the equipment to be used for production |
| 3 | Dispatching Production Units Dispatching | Adjusts and manages production units in terms of Batch, Lot, and Work Order (WO) |
| 4 | Documetn Management | Manages all production-related documents, such as work plans, work orders, and equipment drawings, in a system |
| 5 | Data Collection/Acquisition | Aggregates and collects data per production unit; the ultimate goal is full automation, but on actual shop floors, manually aggregated data is sometimes entered into the system |
| 6 | Labor Management | Manages workers and attendance, utilization rates, performance, etc. |
| 7 | Quality Management | Manages quality history (measurement results, quality judgment results) linked to production results |
| 8 | Process Management | Manages process equipment recipes and the overall process sequence, and aggregates/collects data |
| 9 | Maintenance Management | Manages equipment maintenance history, failure history, etc. |
| 10 | Product Tracking and Genealogy | Locates products in real time and records which equipment and line each produced product was worked on, so that it can be traced back later |
| 11 | Performance Analysis | Analysis of various metrics such as actual results versus the production plan, resource utilization, resource availability, and production uptime |
