MGMT. ManaGeMenT interface. In computing, a management interface is a network interface dedicated to configuration and management operations.
The management interface is usually connected to a dedicated out-of-band management network (VPN or physical network), and non-management interfaces cannot carry device or network management traffic.
This improves network security by greatly reducing the attack surface of the managed device, since external attackers cannot directly access management functions.
In some cases, a serial port is used to access the command-line interface directly, avoiding transmission over the regular network stack entirely and providing an additional layer of isolation from network attacks.
About
Management ports are used to configure, maintain, and support a network device (switch, server, storage array, etc.). Often times this management interface will be connected to a dedicated and segregated VLAN used only by IT for management of network hardware.
For example, most servers (HP, Dell, Huawei, Cisco) have a dedicated management interface which provides complete “lights-out” management of the server (BIOS configuration, Hardware Status, Remote Console capability, and more). This management interface cannot be used for regular network communication by the OS. Often times, the OS isn’t even aware of the management interface.
