Malicious software, or malware, is a collective term for any software that can harm a computer. In the past, only simple computer viruses were active, but in the late 1990s, as infection methods and symptoms diversified, more detailed classifications began to be made. In the past, malware spread through storage media such as disk copying, but as networks developed, infections via email or the web became far more common.
