Mac

Mac OS is a graphical user interface operating system developed by Apple for the Macintosh. At first this operating system was an unnamed operating system included with the Macintosh, simply called the System Software, but its name changed to Mac OS with the release of Mac OS 7.6 in 1997.

Older versions of Mac OS were compatible only with Motorola 68000-based Macintoshes. Later, as Apple released PowerPC-based Macintoshes, Mac OS was also ported to PowerPC. Mac OS 8.1 was the last version compatible with Motorola 68000-based Macintoshes (Motorola 68040), and Mac OS X, which supported only PowerPC, was ported to Intel processors from version 10.4.4 with the release of the Intel Macs. Starting with 10.6 Snow Leopard, support for PowerPC processors was dropped.

Broadly, it can be divided into the traditional Classic series (System 1.0 – Mac OS 9) and the newer releases from Mac OS X onward.

MAC OS X

OS X (pronounced "O-S ten", formerly Mac OS X) is an operating system made by the company Apple. It has shipped on all Macintosh computers since April 2002. This operating system succeeds Mac OS 9, the last classic version of the Mac OS that had led Apple Computer since January 1984. The letter "X" in the name OS X does not mean the letter "X" of the alphabet; it means the Roman numeral "10", because it is the 10th operating system of the Macintosh. This operating system was built with the technology of NeXT, which Apple acquired in December 1996, and is based on Unix. OS X Lion was released on July 20, 2011. Although it had often been abbreviated as OS X before, with the announcement of OS X Mountain Lion the word Mac was officially removed from the former name Mac OS X.

If you don’t have permission to use a disk

If acquiring permissions on an external disk does not apply properly (chown, etc.), it can be solved as follows.

  1. Select the disk and choose File > Get Info.
  2. Click the disclosure triangle next to Sharing & Permissions to expand that section.
  3. Select the “Ignore ownership on this volume” checkbox.

Install Ubuntu

How to install Ubuntu on MacOS:

  1. Download the Ubuntu image.
  2. Format the USB drive.
    • Launch Disk Utility from Applications>Utilities or Spotlight search
    • Insert your USB stick and observe the new device added to Disk Utility
    • Select the USB stick device (you may need to enable the option View>Show All Devices) and select Erase from the tool bar (or right-click menu)
    • Set the format to MS-DOS (FAT) and the scheme to GUID Partition Map
    • Check you’ve chosen the correct device and click Erase
  1. Download, install, and run the Etcher program.
  2. Install it onto the USB drive, then reboot.
    • If you want to use your USB stick with an Apple Mac, you will need to restart or power-on the Mac with the USB stick inserted while the Option/alt (⌥) key is pressed.
    • This will launch Apple’s ‘Startup Manager’ which shows bootable devices connected to the machine. Your USB stick should appear as gold/yellow and labelled ‘EFI Boot’. Selecting this will lead you to the standard Ubuntu boot menu.

How to Fix a Slow MacOSX

kernel_task (needs verification)

A rise in kernel_task usage is not an error; it is an OS design that intentionally raises the kernel task's usage to keep other processes from running in situations such as overheating. Since heat is usually the cause, it is recommended to solve it by reducing heat sources or creating an environment with good cooling.

시스템 > 라이브러리 > Extensions > IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

Right-click it and choose Show Package Contents; a Contents file appears. Click it, then

PlugIns > ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext > 패키지 내용 보기

Back up Resources, then find and delete the file matching the model identifier5 shown in System Information. 6

e.g) If it says MacBookPro8,3, then MacBookPro8_3

그 후 시스템 종료 > 리버커리 모드 부팅 > 터미널

Enter csrutil enable, then reboot.

kernel_task - NVRAM reset (needs verification)

NVRAM stands for "non-volatile random-access memory", i.e. non-volatile RAM. Settings for OS X are stored there so they can be accessed quickly!

  • Speaker volume
  • Screen resolution
  • Startup disk selection
  • Recent kernel panic information, if any

Apparently the official website recommends resetting NVRAM if any of the above applies. (needs verification)

How to reset:

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Hold down the CMD + OPTION + P + R keys.
  3. While holding them, press the power button.
  4. Keep holding the CMD + OPTION + P + R keys and you will hear the first startup chime. Do not let go!
  5. Keep holding the keys until you hear the startup sound a second time.
  6. Release the keys as soon as you hear the second startup sound.

mds_store (needs verification)

It is related to Spotlight activity; just disable it.

$ sudo mdutil -a -i off

To enable it again:

$ sudo mdutil -a -i on
