The MIT License is the most representative of the software licenses that originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is also written as the X11 License or X License.

The MIT License (MIT LICENSE) is a license developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States to help the university's software engineering students. There is no rule that products modifying software under the MIT License must be distributed as open source, and it is popular with users who want to avoid the strictness of the GNU General Public License. A representative piece of software under this license is the X Window System.
