MISRA-C is a development standard for C programming developed by MISRA (Motor Industry Software Reliability Association). The aim of "MISRA-C" is code safety, portability, and reliability for embedded systems written in the ISO C language. For the C++ language, the guidelines are MISRA C++.
Although "MISRA-C" is a model written by the automotive industry, it is used widely in industries other than automotive. "MISRA-C" can be described as a set of guidelines broadly applied as Best Practice in many industries such as aerospace, medical equipment, defense, and railways.
The first edition of "MISRA-C", "Guidelines for the use of the C language in vehicle based software", was published in 1998 and is officially known as MISRA-C:1998.
The second edition of "MISRA-C", "Guidelines for the use of the C language in critical systems", was published in 2004 and is well known as MISRA-C:2004. In MISRA-C:2004, rules that previously carried several meanings at once were split so that each has exactly one evaluation criterion, and rules unsuitable for development were removed.
Work is currently under way on the next version of "MISRA-C" to reflect ISO-C99.
The MISRA-C guideline documents are available for a fee from organizations such as ISO, BSI Group, and RTCA.
