Luminiferous aether

Aether (aether, ether) is a coined term, a by-product of the wave theory of light, naming the light-wave medium among the media believed to be necessary for waves to propagate (water for water waves, air for sound). It was later developed by Joseph John Thomson, Maxwell, and others and used to explain light and electromagnetic phenomena, but it was eventually shown that aether does not exist. This later contributed to the creation of Einstein's theory of relativity.
