Linux Virtual Server

lastmod 2026-03-15created 2026-03-151 edits

LVS (Linux Virtual Server) is a set of integrated software components for balancing IP load across real servers.

LVS runs on a pair of identically configured computers: one must be the active LVS router and the other the backup LVS router.

The active LVS router serves two roles:

  • Balancing the load across the real servers
  • Checking the integrity of the services on each real server

The backup LVS router monitors the active LVS router and takes over if the active LVS router fails.
