Notes on Linux administrator settings.

New user

Add a new user to the wheel group and set a password.

# useradd -g wheel 사용자이름
# passwd 사용자이름

wheel

The wheel group is a group that acts on behalf of administrator privileges. On a typical Linux system, su and sudo are not something regular account users other than the administrator need to use. If you want to prevent anyone outside the group from running these commands at all, change the group of the relevant file to wheel, add users to the wheel group, and restrict all other account users from accessing the commands at all, which improves system security.

SSH Setting

Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config so the root account cannot be accessed from outside:

AllowUsers 사용자이름
# ...
PermitRootLogin no

Restart the service after the change.

Checking privileges

  • cat /etc/gshadow: check the group file policy (group administrators)
  • vi /etc/sudoers: configure sudo command rules.
