In general, linguistics is the study of human language.
(Grammatology is rarely discussed in modern linguistics. Since research proceeds from the view that speech is the lowest-level physical basis of language, writing is regarded as an incidental tool or as something that comes after language, and is excluded from the subjects of linguistic research.)
