LibreSSL is an open-source implementation of the SSL and TLS protocols. In April 2014, OpenBSD developers forked (software development) it from OpenSSL in response to the Heartbleed security vulnerability, to refactor the code of the OpenSSL cryptography software library and create a more secure implementation.

LibreSSL was forked from the 1.0.1g branch of OpenSSL and follows the security guidelines of the OpenBSD project.
