Laws as code, precedents as code too. Every law and precedent is a Markdown file, and every amendment and ruling is a Git commit.

About

legalize-kr is a project that archives the laws and court precedents of the Republic of Korea, provided by the Ministry of Government Legislation's National Law Information Sharing service, as Markdown + Git history.

Every law is archived as a Markdown document and every amendment as a Git commit; precedents are likewise archived as Markdown documents with Git history ordered by ruling date.

How is the project organized?

At first, the homepage, pipeline, and laws were all managed together in a personal repository (9bow/legalize-kr). As it got more attention than expected and many people seemed to need it, I created a GitHub org named legalize-kr and split the repositories. The current repositories are as follows:

  • legalize-kr/legalize-kr: all laws of the Republic of Korea, including 6,907 laws and 81,629 amendment records.
  • legalize-kr/precedent-kr: all published precedents, including a total of 123,467 precedents across 8 case types.
    • The above counts of laws and precedents are as of April 9, 2026.
  • legalize-kr/legalize-web: repository for the legalize.kr homepage
  • legalize-kr/legalize-pipeline: pipeline code for collecting and managing laws and precedents (Python)
  • legalize-kr/compiler: law compiler used to rebuild all laws and precedents from scratch (Rust)
