LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) is a free and open-source desktop environment for Unix and POSIX-compatible platforms (Linux or BSD). The goal of the LXDE project is to provide a fast and energy-efficient desktop environment.

It is designed to run smoothly even on low-performance computers, laptops, and low-power ultra-small computers. In a 2010 test comparing the four popular desktop environments of the time, LXDE 0.5, GNOME 2.29, KDE 4.4, and Xfce 4.6, LXDE used the least memory and consumed the least energy.

LXDE is the default desktop environment in distributions such as Lubuntu and Knoppix.

LXDE is written in the C programming language, uses the GTK+ toolkit, and runs on Unix and POSIX-compatible platforms. LXDE updates its individual components on a rolling release basis. LXDE's window manager is Openbox, and it includes code under the GPL and LGPL licenses.

History

The LXDE project was started in 2006 by Taiwanese programmer Hong Jen Yee. He was also known as PCMan because he released PCManFM, a new file manager and the first LXDE module. Many distributions began to create LXDE versions, which helped further raise the popularity of LXDE, a relatively new desktop environment.
