Korea (韓國, Hanguk) is a common noun referring to the country of the Korean people or the country of the Korean Peninsula. Since 1945, and as of 2012, two states have existed on the Korean Peninsula: the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The Republic of Korea calls itself ‘Hanguk’, while the Democratic People's Republic of Korea mainly calls itself ‘Joseon’. For convenience, this page uniformly uses ‘Hanguk’ (Korea), the term used in the Republic of Korea.
