Kodi (formerly XBMC) is a free and open-source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. It supports multiple operating systems and hardware platforms, and has a software 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It lets users play and view most streaming media, including videos, music, podcasts, and videos from the Internet, as well as all digital media files from local and network storage media.
It is well known as a multi-platform alternative to Windows Media Center for home theater PC (HTPC) use.
On August 1, 2014, starting with version 14, XMBC was officially renamed Kodi. On November 10, 2015, the Kodi trademark was given to the XBMC Foundation.
