Kickstarter is an American crowdfunding service launched in 2009. It has attracted funding for projects in a wide range of fields, including film, music, performing arts, comics, and video games. A person who posts a project is called a creator, and a person who contributes to a project is called a backer. The creator sets a funding goal and receives the money if the goal is reached or exceeded; if the goal is not met, the money is returned to the backers. Backers receive rewards rather than money or equity. A reward means a tangible or intangible compensation specified in the project, such as the product the creator developed.
