In cryptography, a key derivation function (KDF) uses a pseudorandom function (typically a cryptographic hash function or block cipher) and can be used to obtain keys in a required format, such as stretching a key into a longer key or converting a group element resulting from a Diffie–Hellman key exchange into a symmetric key for use with AES. Keyed cryptographic hash functions are popular examples of pseudorandom functions used for key derivation.
