KakaoTalk is a global mobile instant messenger launched by Kakao Corp. on March 18, 2010.

With winetricks, install the following list. 

winetricks gdiplus wmp9 riched20

WARNING

The firewall blocking problem comes from not installing the libraries above, so install the libraries

Download the KakaoTalk installer and run it with wine. 

wine KakaoTalk_Setup.exe

After installing, set the language to Korean and run it. 

LANG="ko_KR.UTF-8" wine KakaoTalk.exe

Successful install on Ubuntu 20.04

Install playonlinux. 

$ sudo apt-get install wine winebind playonlinux

During installation, choose the option to download online.

After installation completes, you must uncheck "Run KakaoTalk". Otherwise an error occurs.

Install a Korean font (NanumGothic): 

$ sudo apt-get install fonts-nanum*

Select libraries: gdiplus, riched20, riched30, wmp9

WARNING

I selected them, but they were not installed properly.

Add env LANG=ko_KR.UTF-8 to the execution (Exec) part of the command line passed to the desktop shortcut. 

nvim ~/.local/share/applications/KakaoTalk.desktop

Exec=/usr/share/playonlinux/playonlinux –run KakaoTalk env LANG=ko_KR.UTF-8 %F

Uninstall 

opm-wine64 ~/.opm/var/wine64/drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/Kakao/KakaoTalk/uninstall.exe

Changing the Windows OS version from 7 -> 10 with wine64cfg and then installing worked fine

How to integrate the tray icon

Install gnome-shell-extension-top-icons-plus and enable it through gnome Tweaks. The script referenced from the post is as follows:

Troubleshooting

Duplicated Korean input on Linux

How to fix input that comes out like "가가나나다다" (ga-ga-na-na-da-da, each syllable doubled):

  1. Open the wine registry editor,
  2. create the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver key (the folder icon is a "key"; create it if it doesn't exist),
  3. from the right-click context menu, use New > String Value to create a string value with Value name inputStyle, and set its Value data to root.
  4. Finally, reboot

Korean input shows up as "ㅁㅁㅁ" (boxes)

If it still displays like this after setting "MS Shell Dlg" to the font you want, change the font in the Kakao settings under Display > Basic > Font.
