Jurisprudence (法學) is the academic discipline that studies law. It organizes the concept of law, classifies the types of laws, and studies the effect, application, and interpretation of law.
In the past in South Korea, jurisprudence was criticized as "conceptual jurisprudence" and "regime jurisprudence" because it ignored social problems and legal reality and focused solely on statutory law, and it was also stigmatized as "exam jurisprudence", having been reduced to little more than a subject for passing the bar exam. As democratization has progressed, however, many researchers have accumulated results through sound approaches and methodologies, and much has improved.
