A Java applet is an applet distributed in the form of Java bytecode. It can be run in a web browser with a built-in Java virtual machine or with AppletViewer, distributed by Sun Microsystems. Among them, a malicious tool called Java Applet Killer can attack every Windows operating system. Java applets were introduced in the first version of the Java language, released in 1995.
Java applets are usually written in Java, but other languages such as Jython, JRuby, Pascal, Scala, and Eiffel (via SmartEiffel) can also be used.
Java applets run very fast; until 2011 they were several times faster than JavaScript. Unlike JavaScript, Java applets had access to 3D hardware acceleration, so they could be optimized for non-trivial, computation-intensive visual functions.
Because Java bytecode is cross-platform (platform-independent), Java applets can run through browsers (or other clients) on many operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, FreeBSD, Unix, macOS, and Linux.
