A Java Servlet is a server-side program, or its specification, that dynamically generates web pages using Java; it is commonly just called a "servlet".
Java Servlet is part of the Java EE specification, and many web systems such as online shopping malls and online banking are implemented mainly using this feature.
Similar technologies include CGI using Perl and others, mod_php which runs PHP inside the Apache web server process, and ASP running on Microsoft's IIS. Whereas CGI creates a new process to respond to each request, a Java Servlet responds to each external request with a thread, which is lighter than a process, so it is more lightweight. Also, because Java Servlets are implemented in Java, they run on a variety of platforms.
