- The Popover API replaces the JavaScript event listeners, state management, and manual ARIA attribute syncing that were required in traditional tooltip implementations with native browser features
- With just the popover attribute and the popovertarget attribute, opening/closing, Esc key handling, and keyboard navigation work automatically
- Improved screen reader predictability, automatic aria-expanded syncing, focus restoration, etc. eliminate entire categories of accessibility bugs
- JavaScript is still needed in some areas such as timing control and hover intent detection, but the browser handles the core interaction model
- Libraries remain useful for large design systems or when complex positioning is needed, but the default is shifting to the native API
