New I/O is a package newly added in JDK1.4. The official name of JDK1.4 is Java 2 Standard Edition JDK1.4.
New I/O is a feature provided by the java.nio package. Broadly, it provides new features and improved performance in buffer management classes, extended network and file I/O, character set support, and regular expression character representation.
Packages
The java.nio package is divided into the following classes.
- java.nio
- java.nio.channels
- java.nio.channels.spi
- java.nio.charset
- java.nio.charset.spi
Here you can see some with spi attached. This is SPI (Service Provider Interface), which lets you substitute classes provided by the programmer. This means the programmer can change the default implementation of the related classes. However, this applies only to special cases, so just be aware that it exists.
