jQuery is a cross-browser JavaScript library embedded in HTML, designed to simplify client-side scripting. John Resig formally introduced it at Barcamp NYC in New York City in 2006. jQuery is one of the most popular JavaScript libraries today.

jQuery is free and open software dual-licensed under the MIT License and the GNU General Public License v2. jQuery's syntax is designed to make it easy to view code, navigate the Document Object Model, create animations, handle events, and develop Ajax. jQuery also provides features that let developers build plugins.

Microsoft and Nokia have announced plans to include jQuery in their platforms. Microsoft adopted it in the ASP.NET AJAX framework and ASP.NET MVC framework in Visual Studio, and Nokia integrated it into its runtime web widget development platform. jQuery has also been used in MediaWiki since version 1.16.

Example

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="ko">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8" />
<script src="//code.jquery.com/jquery.min.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<div>원래 내용 1</div>
<div>원래 내용 2</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
$('div').text('새 내용');
</script>
</body>
</html>
