When managing a network, you will undoubtedly have to deal with subnets. Some network administrators can do binary math very quickly to determine subnet masks. Others, however, may need help, and this is where the ipcalc tool comes in.
Ipcalc actually takes an IP address and netmask and gives you the resulting broadcast, network, Cisco wildcard mask, and host range. It can also be used as a teaching tool that presents subnet results as easy-to-understand binary values.
ipcalc is used as follows.
- Validate IP address
- Show calculated broadcast address
- Display hostname determined via DNS
- Display network address or prefix
